““Ella Jazz Across Cultures” – (October 20-23) celebrating a unique collaboration with the “Brazilian Voices and the Brazilian Music Institute at UF With the support from the Center for Latin American Studies, Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, Digital Worlds Institute, Center for Arts, Migration, and Entrepreneurship, the School of Music, and the College of the Arts, we are promoting the music of Ella Fitzgerald celebrating the work of Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim in a series of workshops, table discussion, and concert.
The Jazz Age was a cultural phenomenon that originated in the US but soon made its way across the world. This year’s event will focus on the multicultural influences of Brazilian music and its interaction with jazz, among other topics. The classes and training will be delivered in a workshop format with a concluding concert that will feature UF students, guest artists, and faculty. We will also hold a “Conversation with the Neighborhood” during the four-day event. The event also portrays how jazz influenced Bossa Nova or Brazilian Jazz and how this genre has transformed Brazilian and US music. “Ella Jazz Across Cultures” will provide a new exposure to the many facets of Brazilian Jazz, Samba, and Bossa Nova through a variety of training, workshops, concert, and exposure to diversity and music cross-culturally.
