Tom Petty Weekend FAQ

What is Heartwood Soundstage?

Heartwood is a state of the Art Recording Studio and Music Venue in Downtown Gainesville.   In addition to the Indoor Soundstage Heartwood also has an outdoor event space with accommodations for up to 3000 music fans.

The larger outdoor stage,  served as the site of the first Tom Petty Weekend on his birthday In October 201, shortly after his untimely death.

Where is Heartwood Soundstage?

Heartwood is located just south of downtown Gainesville, at 619 S. Main Street. It is one block north of the Cade Museum. The address 619 S. Main covers a whole block. The entrance to Heartwood is on the north side of the block, identifiable as an opening in as white wall on the east side of Main Street.

Last year’s concert was free. Why isn’t it free this year?

In response to the tremendous enthusiasm generated by last year’s tribute, we wanted to make this year even more spectacular. We had enough time this year to fly in some of the great musicians who have played with Tom Petty in the past, including Tom Leadon and Danny Roberts of Mudcrutch fame, as well as one of the premier Tom Petty tribute bands in the country, Free Fallin from Minnesota.  We have also added an array of other great amenities and attractions, including story telling from past friends of Tom Petty.

All of these improvements will make the weekend unforgettable. They also quintupled our costs from last year. We kept our ticket price very low ($25 for two days) to help cover our expenses.

What about parking?

Parking is likely to be a challenge. If possible, consider being dropped off by friends or a car-for-hire service. There will be food and beverage services on site. If you do elect to drive, there is the Gainesville Regional Utility employee parking lot 2 blocks NE of Heartwood that allows free parking on weekends and evenings. The County Courthouse lot, 3 blocks north on Main Street (west side), also has some spots. Downtown Gainesville also has a parking garage, about 5 blocks away.

We have made a great effort to hire superb musicians to make this a memorable event. All performances will feature a combination of original Petty/Heartbreakers songs, songs covered by TPATH, or music that Tom Petty loved and which inspired him to write and perform.

We will feature former bandmates of Tom Petty, Tom Leadon and Danny Roberts, as well as bands that include friends and associates who knew him when.

We also have scheduled several Tom Petty storytelling sessions, which will feature unique behind-the-scenes personal remembrances of Gainesville’s hometown hero.

Events will take place on the main stage outside and on our inside stage, an acoustically designed listening room intended for live recording and streaming of music. Your ticket entitles you to inside access; however, because the inside capacity is much smaller than the outside, inside ticket passes will be available on a first come, first served basis.

IMPORTANT: You may pick up passes for each inside show at the information booth no sooner than an hour before the event begins. Please consult the schedule. Also, note that all inside shows will be viewable on the large outside LED television screens, so even if you don’t get inside, you won’t miss anything.

There will be abundant food vendors scattered throughout the site. We have an extended boundaries permit which allows the sale and consumption of beer and wine anywhere on our 3.5 acre site, including of course the field where the outside stage is located. (Note that Depot Park does not allow alcohol consumption in the park or near the stage. You are not permitted to carry alcohol off of the site, as will be indicated by signs. Please enjoy yourselves but drink responsibly.

Just one block away is the brand new Cade Museum, founded in honor of Robert Cade, inventor of Gatorade. The Cade Museum features exhibits and demonstrations devoted to creativity and invention. Because Robert Cade loved music and played the violin, the Museum values musical invention as much as science and engineering, and currently features an exhibit on Les Paul. The Cade is a sponsor of Tom Petty Weekend, and your Heartwood lanyard entitles you to $2 off admission prices.
